Is Bigger and Stronger really a good thing

Concussions are becoming more of a topic, because our sports teams are becoming big and stronger than ever. Our President Barack Obama even held a hour long summit addressing the issue sports are having with Concussion.

Link to Obama speaking on his own concussion experience http://youtu.be/d5fHMSDtpMg

Here we have a picture of Barack Obama, at the Concussion Summit
Where we see him stressing the point of further research into Youth Concussions
"We have to change a culture that says, 'Suck it up,' - Obama

Concussions have been evolving from being A injury that just might happen when involved in sports, to becoming the topic of a hour long  Presidential Speeches and major Law Suits.

After this speech given in May of 2014, we have seen at least $75 Million Dollars provided for the research of concussions.

Why are they making this such a issue? We have lawsuits on top of lawsuits. According to ESPN "The NFL recently agreed to pay $765 million to settle concussion claims from thousands of former players whose complaints range from headaches to Alzheimer's disease. That settlement is still awaiting a judge's approval, while a group of former professional hockey players has filed a class-action lawsuit of their own against the National Hockey League for head injuries sustained on the ice."

So knowing Concussions are a major issue, I come across Management and Prevention of Sport-Related Concussions by Emily Hanson, Andrea Stracciolini, Rebekah Mannix, and William P. Meehan III.

The article touches subject on how there is a larger increase in concussions.
Stating that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that there is as many as 3.8 million sport-related traumatic brain injuries occurring each year. Also mentioning the incident in 1984 where we have a football player who returned to the sport with some remaining symptoms of concussions. He ends up collapsing and dying, this helps to fight for further research. They discuss the sports in which concussions are common, symptoms of concussions, an actual definition of a concussion , instances in which it happens and how to mange it.

The problem is the lack of information, and to solve that they conduct research and inform to create better understanding of concussions.

The conclusion o the study is that changing the rules of sport, strengthening the
cervical musculature, and teaching the skills necessary for collision anticipation, may help reduce the risk of sport-related concussions. Similarly, concussion education and related legislation may reduce the risk of secondary concussive injuries.

This makes me wonder, what skills can be improved to prevent concussions. But to leave on a interesting not, I want t show you your brain under the influences of a concussion.

Dead in America

Fifty-one years and we still see a issue, are country where every man is born equal is still having a issue with true equality. Fifty-one years is  the time that has passed since Martin Luther King wrote and published the "Letter from Birmingham Jail", following his arrest.

http://www.uscrossier.org/pullias/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/king.pdf
Martin Luther King, created this letter when being arrested in  Birmingham while leading  a protest without a permit (ironically African-Americans were not allowed to receive permits). This letter is a response to a newspaper article addressing him, signed by a large group of clergyman. In this letter he explains that the protest was a wise and timely choice. Going into describing the issues and pain experienced by the black community. He also explained why it was meant to happen in Birmingham in the following quote:
I am in Birmingham because injustice is here. Just as the eighth-century prophets left their little villages and carried
their "thus saith the Lord" far beyond the boundaries of their hometowns; and just as the Apostle Paul left his little village of
Tarsus and carried the gospel of Jesus Christ to practically every hamlet and city of the Greco-Roman world, I too am compelled
to carry the gospel of freedom beyond my particular hometown.
He uses rhetoric like ethos, pathos and logos. Evoking emotion when he describes his children's own personality being molded by racism. Speaks of how as a African-American you never truly get your proper salutation. Or explaining the steps to using nonviolent protesting.

And although they no longer beat us with Billy clubs, America is not a country in which we as man are born equal. It is a matter of social class and financial stability. We are in shackles, and are financial ability seems to be the slave owners. Examples of this feeling being expressed is in the following lyrics.

Rich white man rule the nation still, only difference is we all slaves now
The chains concealed in our thoughts... (Runaway, J Cole)

Although black and white is still a man made issue that we continue to beat, knowing we will never really compromise. Our bigger issue is control, a paycheck has taken over us all as a people. We live in a everyone for themselves type of nation, and although we have things like government assistance we still see a struggle.

And in 2015 that is my number one issue as a "civilian".

The wish to make a decent amount of money, so that I do not drown in this world.

Like Martin I too experience the struggles of being black in America, but see my skin can get me killed. In my opinion, but my income or lack of could cause worst. See you have to make a certain amount of money to be heard.

A piece of paper, reinforced by gold has thrown us all into the catergories of a nigga (a negro, a coon, 3/5ths, inferior).

Woman working out

Being an Athletic Training Major, I am in a sports medicine field.
Which goes "hand and hand" with exercise.
Something that would always be on the top of interest when doing research.

q.equinox is a blog watched by the athletic training world, but I will be looking at a article on the proper way for females to wear make-up during a work-out.

http://q.equinox.com/articles/2014/10/workout-makeup

According to Isabel Burton there are four items needed to look great when exercising.
  1. BB Cream (Light foundation)
  2. Mascara
  3. Nude Lip liner
  4. Lip Tint
You might wonder out of all post, why I picked this more to start a research experiment. But I would love to know how many woman avoid needed work outs because their focused on their appearance.

Being a student athlete in high school, I never had an issue with that but other females did.

Worried about how would they look after? I do remember in high school gym class girls in the bathroom rushing to groom themselves before next period. How long would hey need to get back to a presentable stage? And this research would determine if appearance plays a role in athletic performance in females, and I so what to do to solve this dilemma.

Why would you pick that?

Url's to the Twitter's that appeal to my major

When looking at my major, there is a funny story behind it. Originally I wanted to be a Physical Therapist, but I arrived to Eastern realizing they did not have that as a option. So I started to look into other options. Although there were various options like sports medicine and strength coaching I chose Athletics Training.

This job is described as ..

  • Athletic trainers prevent, examine, and treat athletes' injuries.
  • Provide physical therapy for athletes who are recovering from injuries and to show athletes how to build their strength and avoid further injury.
  • Athletic trainers are employed by schools, colleges, and universities that have athletic programs and sports teams. They also work for professional teams in baseball, football, basketball, ice hockey, and other sports. Some athletic trainers work for health clubs and summer camps
Description comes from "Athletic Trainer Job Description, Career as an Athletic Trainer, Salary, Employment - Definition and Nature of the Work, Education and Training Requirements, Getting the Job." StateUniversity.com.Web. 07 Jan. 2015.
.
My first Url is important because that is the National Association of Athletic Training's Twitter, making their post important. It is where you go to see what major news is surfacing in the athletic training community. From injury maintenance, new findings or things as important as the Athletic Training Hall of Fame.

The second speaks about concussions, a common issue seen in this field. Expectually in contact sports, so I feel following this page will give me a stronger understanding of this injury. It also drifts into athletes injuries and shows some of the top athletic trainers.

Lastly, we have Athletic Training Problems which is something anybody with the major should be interested in. You here about rare injuries and how they handle them. And treatments, which are always interesting to someone who has a interest in sports.

First TedX Talk ....

http://www.ted.com/talks/chimamanda_adichie_the_danger_of_a_single_story?language=en

In this speech, given by the famous story teller Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie she used her own personal experiences to create a image in our minds. She tells these stories in a chronological order starting with a story of her experience with literature. Stating that she only had access to European Literature, creating only an image of white people. Then she speaks of her families servant that was less fortunate then her own family. Next, she speaks of her roommates response to her, when she began attending school in America. And lastly, her college professor someone you would expect to be less ignorant, and how he told her that her image of African's civilians' was inaccurate because none of them were starving. The connection with all of these stories is the unrealistic image of Africans.
Our author also tells us about her own experience in which she had these inaccurate images of another race, on a trip to Guadalajara. Seeing Hispanics laughing and living regular lives surprised her because the news portrayed a image of them as if their only goals were coming across the American boarder.
Like Adiche the issues of a single story is relevant to me, when speaking about the police brutality situations that are broadcasted on our news channels. Looking from both perspectives, you see two different things. To me it seems that the white community sees it as unfortunate but as soon as it becomes less of a big topic they forget about it. While it is becoming a major issue in the African American community. The community seeing it as, racism and a problem that our government is not paying attention to.

I Experienced A Single Story too...
I grew-up on the eastside of Detroit, but attended school in a surrounding suburb community. Going into my school people expected me to take the easy way and this caused some issues for me. When I walked in to my first Advanced Placement class I could count the familiar faces on one had. I was one of three African-American persons in my courses. In our first semester those two other people were the only ones I would work with. However, in the following semester our teacher put us in random groups bringing me out of my comfort zone. Fast forward ....
I remember my group  members telling me that they were surprised by my English skill level. Stating that they had seen me around campus speaking in slang and they had limited me to this. This happened to me my 10th grade year, and it is something that I have continuously experiences.
