One Goal, Multiple Methods.

In class we were responsible for reading a novel that decided to try to pass it's self as article. Although the article was long it made some important points. It touched subject on the fact that we have professors with masters and doctoral degrees that expect collegiate level writing responses from people fresh out of high school. The author also addresses the fact that we have all the styles and rules expected for particular courses. And these rules and styles have created "rubric" type responses, which to me takes away from creativity.

Another issue with this, is it insinuates that all students learn the way teachers like to make it seem we learn. So our author conducted a study, asking participants to draw two pictures. One of the spaces in which they write and the second one showing the process of there writing.

Getting many different examples but they all showed that nobody uses the old form of writing. No one truly; gets an idea, write a paper, does a rough draft, get it proof-read and then does a final draft. Most people participate in multiple activities which help to develop their idea. I myself am one of those people.

First there is my space(s).

These are the spaces in which I write. There are multiple places because I'm a little bit of a busy body, and I hate being in one space.

Then there is my process.
This process looks chaotic, but I go through this multiple times depending on the amount of creativity the paper requires. I go from place to place, and sometimes my ideas come up and when they do I use my responses to adapt. Most subjects I choose to speak on are provocative, "so my first question is do you think this will offend my professor?" But my process is like a scavenger hunt but it works perfectly for me. Except for the times I procrastinate, then I get a little overwhelmed.

Problems. Problems. Problems

So when looking into my annotated bibliography, and determining what I know and what I don't know. My ENGL 121 Professor Brett challenged me, instead of thinking of my paper as a regular paper I should think about how to solve a problem. This caused me to think hard on what is my problem. And I came to the conclusion there are a lot of problems for me to pick from.

First it was, if the NFL and other organizations are being sued because Athlete's are experiencing long term life paralyzing injuries why does this country still support football being played.

According to Forbes Magazine (http://www.forbes.com/sites/monteburke/2013/08/17/how-the-national-football-league-can-reach-25-billion-in-annual-revenues/) The NFL can revenue 25 billion dollars annually.

You must keep in mind, the sport of football goes beyond the field. Its deeper than the contracts that are signed, you must also keep in mind the money made off merchandise, ticket sales, advertisements,  endorsement deals, meet in greets, and etc.

Back in 2005, the NFL had a revenue of  6.16 Billion dollars.

The following URL gives you the top five sources of the NFL's Revenue.

Another problem that I found is, the fact that all the people that speak up about the issues they face because of concussions are recent instances. All of the articles, peer-reviewed and regular are all within the last 3 years. Which is sad, and makes me wonder why we have no statements from 2000 or 1990
.

These things matter because this is something way more serious that we give it credit. An issue that has been occurring, but just recently being discussed.

James Sweet

This Blog will be short and Sweet, Get it Sweet!

I will be speaking about my Introduction of Athletic Training Teacher James Sweet.
"James joined the ATEP program in the fall of 2007 as the program's Clinical Coordinator. Academically, Sweet is a graduate from Western Michigan University with a Bachelor degree of Exercise Science and a Master degree of Arts, specializing in Exercise Physiology. Sweet also holds a Graduate Certificate in Orthotics and Prosthetics from Eastern Michigan University."

http://www.emich.edu/chhs/hphp/atr/faculty/sweet.php

According to RateMyProfessor.Com, a website that rates professors from all other on a scale of 5. His overall quality is a 4.7 and he also scores well in the categories of helpfulness, clarity and easiness.

http://www.ratemyprofessors.com/ShowRatings.jsp?tid=1022481

However, out off all the faculty I chose Jim/James Sweet because I am only a freshman and I have limited knowledge and interaction with faculty members connected to my major of Athletic Training.
I can tell you that he is very charismatic, and although the course is designed so that a child could past. The information James provides you with is helpful and something anyone with the major should know to know.

The link between Jim and my research is his interest in collision injuries. These consist of broken bones and my topic of concussions. In are class we watch these videos about how the injuries occur. and read about these organizations behind the research into it.

The little information provided by James Sweet has created a real interest in concussions caused in collision sports.

Concussion Awareness

Hear ye, Hear ye!

http://theconcussionblog.com/2014/07/25/c4ct-concussion-awareness-summit-reconvenes-next-week/

This is one of my sources, a blog about concussion awareness summit reconvenes next week. It is speaking about a whole week about concussion awareness. It is addressing the medical field as a whole, but specifically sports medicine.

"The #C4CT Concussion Awareness Summit is being convened on July 31, 2014 to explore the potential link between TBI and Alzheimer’s disease.  A diverse working group of clinicians, medical researchers, policy makers, international diplomats, athletes, celebrities, and philanthropic organizations will be assembled to raise awareness, advance clinical research, and develop public policy in order to address this major unmet medical need and public health issue."

This week occurred January 29th, 2014

I chose to speak of it because this is the first time in a while concussions were discussed publicly. This being because of lawsuits toward the NFL and the NCAA, because of concussions leading to things as serious as depression, post-concussion syndrome and suicide.

This source is also providing me with a video, that gives me a total recap of the whole summit. The summit gives you the opinion on the subject from Neurologist and Ex-Athlete's with the experience.

Long story short the goal of the summit is to get everyone there on the same page, so they can speak and get the world on the same page of concussion awareness.

You can tell that this is a blog, because in comparison of a peer-reviewed article there is not research behind it.

The Genre's

Generally when you hear Genre's what do you thing of? Like really if someone ask you what are your favorite genre's what would you answer? My answer would sound a little like the following.

I like a little 90's R&B, then local rap and lastly a little bit of Carey Underwood.

But really, this blog I am responsible for talking about the genre's of the sources I chose to use in my annotated bibliographies.

Peer-Reviewed

This genre is one that is widely respected. Imagine that you were
an old man professor whom had just wrote an article about why candy is bad. In this article making a statement, providing scientifically proven evidence and then concluding your argument. That would not be the last step, you would have to pass it along to many people of your academic standing and get it revised. And once that is done you must edit it one again, correcting ALL ISSUES.
That is why I use my peer-reviewed articles to prove things. Points that I believe in are not just believed by me, but and additional 6+ people with Masters and Doctorate Degrees.

Videos

This is useful only when the person speaking is credible, such as a President or Professor. In my Annotated Bibliography I use a video of a BMX biker who experienced an additional disorder following his concussion.

This being useful, because it provides me with a statement from someone who personally experienced it. You can't always meet people who know something personally about hat you are researching.

 Blogs

Blog's are another instance in which you can gain the opinion of others on a particular subject. Another interesting element of blog's is the comments, they give you the ability to gain even more opinions on your topic.

 Newspaper

The newspaper has one side, the make a stance and although journalist add some of their opinion. Newspaper's are used as a credible source for information.

Although I am more than aware of all these genre's this is my first instance in which I quoted a blog or video. Past educators encouraged me to use things from websites that ended only in ".gov"or ".edu". Talking and typing that sounds funny. Looking into the sources you may use, think about the fact that we are so dependent on the internet for sources. Did we completely forget that books and real newspapers exist. I hope not.

Evolution

Image result for texting
Parents and researchers have been complaining continuously about texting. Stating that it is negatively affecting our youth, killing our cognitive skills. But what happens when we have a prestigious linguist state that that is not the fact. That is what you experience when listening to Linguist, John McWhorter's thirteen minute Tedx Talk.

https://www.ted.com/talks/john_mcwhorter_txtng_is_killing_language_jk

You may wonder why his opinion is valued, why do I care about how he believer that texting is a stage of evolution in our language rather than a negative affect. It is because not only has he majored in Linguistics at Universities such as NYU and Stafford. He is a professor at Columbia University, so in my personal opinion I believe his opinion is some what worthy of your attention.

He speaks of how language transforms, words develop new meanings and different functions. He connects this to the issue of texting, by stating that texting is a form of figure speak. He speaks very highly of it as well, stating that for years people of great calibers had the same issue. This issue being that nobody wrote the same way that they spoke, something that has been taught to our 21st century generation. And texting is the bridge, in text messaging we are able to text the way that we would have a conversation. Able to be informal and conversant in a more realistic manner. He speaks of words like "lol" which is used to show a gesture or to set a tone. An example of that from my daily routine includes "wya" it means "Where are you at?" it is something that I use everyday when texting my friends or girlfriend, however I would never send it to a teacher in a email or to my employer.

No matter how interesting the video is, the question is how does that effect me? Think about when you come back to school from summer break, you can barely construct a proper email. All that texting style you have been using.

Something so little is ignore but it shows that there is a difference. To keep myself in control I think about my setting and to who I am contacting someone. For example you can ask someone to study with you can be very different depending on the context on the relationship.

Text to a Friend: Wassup Fool, Way. Lets hit the library

Text to a person on superiority: Hello Mrs. Griffith, I was wondering if there was somewhere we could meet to review for our exam. If so, I am very thankful, and just let me know a time convenient to your schedule.

So with these things being stated, it is important to remember things like grammer, punctuation, words and socially accepted phrases. Why? In my opinion, because old boring literature is our common ground. People old and young have these basic ideas of what an essay should sound like. So we keep these old boring forms of literature so that we can communicate. Also If we began to talk how we text we would look dumb. Like imagine American ambassadors at International confrences talking about
"BRB(Be Right Back) Obama(Barack Obama) Gotta (Got to) handle this BS (Bullshit) tell the VP (Vice President) to HML(Hit my line/Call me)"
We would 1. Be laughed at and 2. Lose the respect and financial support of so many countries. Literature is an old craft we can't just get rid of for texting. Did we get rid of the Mona Lisa when Graffiti Art was discovered (No).
